Udi Aloni’s new feature film, the winner of this year’s Berlinale Panorama Audience Award, is one of two Israeli films at the festival having the word “junction” in their title. Can one see this as a sign that Israel is standing at an important crossroads in its history? Katoikos.eu spoke to the director and the Palestinian leading actor, Samar Qupty.

The Berlinale’s main award ceremony took place on Saturday, 20 February 2016, at 7.00 pm (CET) — see www.berlinale.de

  • The Golden Bear went to Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea), a documentary by Gianfranco Rosi about the Italian island of Lampedusa, which has become synonymous with the hardships and the hopes of refugees.
  • The Silver Bears went to Death in Sarajevo by Danis Tanović, who received the Grand Jury Prize; A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery directed by Lav Diaz received the Alfred Bauer Prize for a Feature Film That Opens New Perspectives; Mia Hansen-Løve received the Silver Bear for Best Director for her film L’ avenir (Things to Come); 

Star Trek hero Dr Spock, in real life Leonard Nemoy, has left for other galaxies, this time for good. The actor died of chronic pulmonary disease in Los Angeles on 27 February 2015, at the age of 83. He starred in the original Star Trek series in the mid-1960s, as well as in several movies, including the recent two…

…Apart from maintaining its single market, Europe must promote among others its cultural and historic wealth through the media, its educational system and through appropriate festivals and gatherings. The European identity, what unites us, needs to be stressed and take precedence over what divides us. This will serve everybody well in times of crisis, keeping the unity of the continent and benefiting from the accumulated strength of all EU nations. It will also help strengthen the sense of solidarity and promote equality in opportunities and living standards across the EU.
